Throughout the year the children also experience
field trips to various local public places including the DeCordova Museum, Acton
Arboretum, post office, library, fire station and a kindergarten classroom.
The School is governed by the Director and a Board comprised of parents elected to one-year terms. It is licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and its activities are overseen by the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC). All of our teachers are certified in Early Childhood Education and have completed first aid and CPR courses. Three-year-olds are in classes of approximately 13 children with one teacher, one assistant, and one parent helper. Four-year-olds and pre-kindergartners are in classes of approximately 18 children with one teacher, one assistant, and one parent helper. Having parents in the classroom on a regular basis is a unique experience only a cooperative school can offer. Children excitedly anticipate their parent's day at school, and parents enjoy watching their child learn and interact with their friends.
Our goal at the Acton Cooperative School is to provide an environment where all of our children can participate as fully and safely as possible. Given that some of the children attending the school may have food allergies, food-related diseases or environmental allergies, the Coop institutes a policy for a nut-safe environment. In addition, when there is a severely allergic or food-intolerant child in a classroom, the director, staff and parents will work together to eliminate the allergen from the classroom and minimize cross-contamination issues.
